Parking typically requires navigating university permits or using pay stations, so plan ahead; watch out for heavy student foot traffic during the fall and spring semesters. It provides an accessible round for newer players, while the varied layout offers solid approach practice for experienced arms.
NAU also has pay-to-park requirements. You can pay through the kiosk or the app.
The Northern Arizona University Disc Golf Course was designed in 2001 by FDGC club members, especially Chris Gibbs and James Willis. On the university end of things, Jake Epps was instrumental in getting through all the red tape to make this course happen!
The course was originally on the south part of campus between maintenance facilities and south family housing. Due to the installation of an acre-sized solar project, the course was moved south of the family housing around the south fields. After the massive south field expansion, the course was redesigned even further, affectionately now referred to as NAU 3.0
The NAU 3.0 course showcases unique technical holes with lots of elevation change and lots of trouble if a player throws outside the fairway. Signature holes include elevated greens and interesting out-of-bounds.
Spectacular views of the San Francisco Peaks, rock-lined and wood-chipped paths between holes as well as facilities at the gazebo near the fields add to the grandeur of the course.
nau Disc Golf Course FAQs
Is the NAU disc golf course free to play?
Yes, the course itself is completely free to play, though you may need to pay for campus parking depending on when you visit.
Where do I park to play the course?
The course is located on the south end of the NAU campus. Players typically park in the large South Commuter lots (like P62, P64, or P66) located off Pine Knoll Drive. From the parking lot, you walk uphill to the left of the field to find the first tee.
What is the course par and length?
The 18-hole course typically plays at a par 57. The total length ranges between 5,199 and 5,700 feet, depending on the current basket placements. It features concrete tees and DISCatcher Pro or DGA Mach 2 targets.
What is the course terrain like?
The course winds through the beautiful ponderosa pine forest on the edge of campus. The terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling, with grassy fairways and strategic gaps through the trees. Because it is on a college campus, expect heavy foot traffic from students, especially during the fall and spring semesters.
What is the difficulty level?
The course is rated as "Moderate." It offers forgiving open stretches that are accessible for newer players, but the mature pines and campus structures provide enough technical challenge to keep experienced players engaged.
Do I have to pay for parking?
Yes, year-round, vehicles parked on the NAU campus during weekdays must have a valid university permit or pay for short-term parking.
Short-Term Options: You can purchase daily or hourly parking via nearby kiosks (like the Skydome kiosk) or by using the ParkMobile app for specific zones. Garages (like San Francisco or Knoles) offer pay-upon-exit parking.
License Plate Rule: NAU uses a License Plate Recognition (LPR) system. Your license plate must face the drive aisle (do not back in or pull through a space).
Weekends: Parking in commuter lots is generally free on weekends (from Friday at 4:30 PM until Monday at 7:30 AM), but always check the signs at the lot entrance to confirm.
